The thing about poker games is that it takes a well-balanced player and a just little helping of good luck to be able to be able to win. We all know the luck cannot be learned, but the skill set can be, and this is important in winning because it makes up the most part of your game. Of course, it is important to understand the mechanics of the game and be very smart when it comes to picking the cards from your hand that you will be playing, but it is just as important to be able to bluff effectively.

Bluffing in seven-card stud is very important because the players on the table are able to see four of your seven cards in your hand, so you have to make them believe that you are dangerous and that your hole cards are worth a lot. At the same time, it is important because if you know how to bluff, then chances are you are very observant when it comes to what cards are already accounted for, and what cards have already been played or folded, and that consequently will let you know who among the players are bluffing as well.

There’s more to bluffing than just the arrogance that you put on when you try to make the others believe that you’ve got a better hand than what you have. A big part of bluffing is a memory game. For instance, there’s you and two other players. Your hand is K-K-2-J-J-A-9. The door cards of the hands of the other two players are 8-9-10-K, and Q-Q-A-7. Of course, taking into account that three other cards are not yet revealed, then there’s the chance that the first player can get a straight, and that the second player can get trips. This is where memory plays a key role in the bluff. If you know you’ve seen two other queens played in a folded hand, then that second player is bluffing already. As for the one with the near-straight hand, what he needs most are sevens and jacks; check for those as well. It could also be jacks and queens, but since two of the queens are already accounted for, check your memory for the two other queens.

Still, even with the memorization of cards, it is important to observe and interpret the actions of your competitors. This is because since you do not have an idea of what their hole cards are just yet, then there is still a chance for them to actually be not bluffing; therefore, if you think a player is bluffing but he went all-in, then you might want to back down.

The key to effective bluffing is through technique, memory, and of course, believable acting. Stay calm, be observant, and keep your memory as sharp as you can – find ways to be able to memorize the cards that have appeared already – and you’ll be able to bluff the board well.

Standard poker games are played as high games, and this is the system that a lot of poker players are used to. For those who want more chances of winning, or for those who want to up their games a bit, they change the game into a high-low game. The question is, which one is better? Playing a game as a high game, or playing it as a high-low game?

That very well depends on the game. If the game has more or less simple rules (which is not the same as being a simple game altogether, just to make it clear), then you’re good playing the standard high game. But if there are additional rules that make the game more complicated and difficult, then you’re probably better off playing it off as a high-low game to increase chances of having a player actually win.

One such game is the Omaha. Omaha is normally played as a high-low game, because having the players use exact numbers of cards from their hand and from the table to form their poker hand is quite a daunting task, and may even end up with an outcome where no one actually gets to form a hand. This, then, would make it impractical for the players to play the Omaha as just a high game, because with this system, their chances of forming a low hand are higher than their chances of forming a high hand.

When, then, is it okay to play the Omaha as a high game? First, it is alright if you have a very good grip of the game already and you are playing with players who are equally skilled in the game. Because the game is not so popular, it would be difficult to find players with a very good level understanding of the game, but if you are at least on the same level then you might want to play the game as just a high hand. Second, it is alright to play the game as a high game if you are only beginning to learn it. This is because the additional rules of the lowball portion of Omaha high-low might confuse a beginner who’s only starting to understand the rules of Omaha. Also, this is good for those people who have yet to discover techniques on how to play a hand so that it can play both high and low hands.

No game is better than another, then. It all depends on the skill set of a person and how prepared he thinks he is to be able to play one or another – or even both.

The thing about playing a particular set of games is that if they belong to the same group, they would be easy to understand for a person who has been able to play from the same set as well. This is because they are in the same group for a reason – they share common rules and characteristics, only varying ever so slightly. It could be tricky for some of those who play their game like clockwork already, but it takes a shorter time for them to learn the other games from the same group than for them to learn games from an entirely different group altogether.

As we know, community card poker has developed into different variants already. Thanks to those dedicated to the game of poker, we have the ever-popular Texas Hold’Em, which is the most popular poker game today, and we also have Omaha Hold’Em, which is a lesser-known but a very challenging and exciting variant of community card poker. Now, if you are a Texas Hold’Em player who wants to try your hand at Omaha, then you’re going to find the game easier to learn. For starters, they are played the same way in that the number of community cards are the same, the betting structure is the same, and of course, the one with the highest hand wins. There are a few differences that the Texas Hold’Em player must make a mental note of when they want to try out the game of Omaha.

First and foremost, Omaha games are more often played as a hi-lo game than just as a high game or as a lowball game. In that light, a player must know the rules that come with playing the low hand. Also, a player must make himself aware of the strategies that are useful for him to be able to play both high and low hands at the same time. Since we’ve mentioned strategies already, let’s move on to the second thing a poker player most remember: in Omaha, he has to use a very specific and exact number of cards from his hand and from the table in order to form his hand. Given this fact, the strategizing must be done around this fact, because if a poker player makes the mistake of strategizing using three cards in his hand, then he is in it to lose it definitely. A third thing that a player must remember is something that is also important to Texas Hold’Em if a player is playing no-limit: in any game of Omaha, the position is important. Because the forming of hands is very tricky in Omaha, it is important to be able to observe your opponents very well, as well as to ensure that you only end up playing the best poker hands. You’ll never know when a person has a better hand – there are instances when they get really good cards in their hand, so don’t take any risks that may not be worth taking. Keep these in mind, and one last thing: always rememeber that the best way to be good at the game is to keep playing, and you’ll be just fine.

In button games, the dealer is the player who is not participating in the game. His main role is to do all the dealings. The button is a round disk which reveals the player holding the dealer position. The player who has the button is the last to receive cards on the initial deal and places the last hand of the round. The button moves clockwise for proper rotation.

One or more blind bets are stimulate a good game. Blinds are posted before the players can peek at their cards. Blinds are actually a part of a player’s bet depending on the situation. All or part of a blind may not be a bet in a round making it ‘dead’. The player to the left places a small blind and the big blind is posted by the one on his left. The player right at the left of the blinds gets the first turn in the next betting round. On all succeeding poker betting rounds, the first player to the left of the button initiates the action.

Some of the rules involving the use of blinds state that each player is required to grab the opportunity for the button and fulfill the total amount of the blind obligations. This can be done with two methods, namely: the moving button and the dead button. The moving button always moves forward to the next player. As a result the blinds respond accordingly. It is possible to have more than one big blind. In the dead button method, the big blind is placed by the player due for it, and the small blind and button are position appropriately.

The lowball poker rule is slightly distinct from the general rule. Instead of the player with the highest hand, the player with the lowest hand actually wins. It may seem peculiar to you, but that is the main difference of lowball poker from general poker.

In lowball one can have two blinds in the game and ante. All players receive five cards face-down during the start of the game. After the initial deal is completed, each player must either place an opening bet or simply fold. After the opening bet, each player can decide to replace any of his cards through a draw.

When playing an ace to five game, flushes and straights are not accepted. The ace is also considered low. The best hand that can a player can come up with is ace-deuce-three-four-five. In an ace to five game, the suits do not have any value.

When playing a seven to deuce game, the ace is considered high this time, while the straights and flushes are involved this time. In a seven to deuce game, the best possible hand that a player can come up with is deuce-three-four-five-seven, considering that the cards do not belong to the same suit.

In other versions of the game, the ace is regarded as low while the straights and flushes are counted. The best hand possible is ace-deuce-three-four-six. The ace may also be regarded as high and the straights and flushes not counting, thus implying a best hand of deuce-three-four-five-six.

Aside from the different rules for every game that concerns straights and flushes, all other kinds of hands count in low ball poker. The worst possible hand however is a royal flush. The lowball rules of poker are really simple and can add spice to a poker game.

The draw high poker rule basically states that if you draw once again you will have to double your limit.

Draw high poker rules are actually more complicated than Omaha poker rules. Most of them require close adherence to the game and take note of important things in order to attain the best game. For instance, you can limit doubling after each draw or you can use various card combinations

In draw high rules, the ante is included in the structure. There are two poker betting rounds where each follows a draw. A player can maintain some of his cards or dispose the cards that they do not need after the initial betting. Keep in mind that players have the option of the replenishing the disposed cards as a result of the draw high poker rules. In order to determine which turns at which the players replenish the cards, there are two instances. The opener or person sitting to his left, in case an opener has already folded. Specific restrictions also exist and demand certain requirements which an opener must fulfill, such as high cards holding.

The draw high poker rules state that after every draw, the betting limit must be doubled. Having stated this, it is highly essential that to possess enough bankroll before playing the round. This idea is unique as compared to strip poker rules. In strip poker, a lot of articles of clothing is involved instead of money.

In draw high poker, it is also very helpful to learn on the button instead of after a play. However, keep in mind that there may also be some money bet and lost. Anyone would rather prevent this from happening. Therefore, it is a must to understand all high poker rules in order to succeed.

A kill pot is defined by the limits of betting in poker are raised from the normal stakes of the game after reaching set standards. Kill pots are usually observed in split pot games. If a specific player grabs the whole pot and is above a declared amount, the next pot is regarded as a kill pot. The kill pot demands the player who previously grabbed the pot to place a blind which raises the limits for the next hand.

In order to explain this more clearly, a kill pot states that an overblind is placed. This actually raises the betting limit. There is also another thing such as a half-kill, which is one and a half times the big blind, and raises the betting limits by that amount. A kill pot is not required in a single game. However, this is often exercised in lowball especially when a player wishes to be dealt in soon instead of waiting to get the big blind. In some instances such as high-low split games, a player who wins all of a pot larger than a set size is retired to kill the next pot. Other games that require a kill pot require a player to kill the next pot if he wins two consecutive pots. A kill button is assigned to the pot winner and holds on to it until the following round. If he wins again the next kill pot is also assigned to him. The kill pot maintains balance in the game, and keeps a smooth flow.

Specific rules may vary from casino to casino and quite frankly, that is the thing that attracts players to poker games. Rules may be different in various places yet they still follow the same guidelines enough for players to understand, familiarize and follow wherever part of the world they may be. Poker has been so popular that there are people who actually wrote about all the ins and outs of it, including the proper rules behavior. The name Robert Ciaffone comes to mind as one of the leading authority when it comes to card room rules. It includes the proper conduct when in the room, proper poker manners while playing and other poker rules.

Conduct Code

* Cheating.

* There is a code of conduct in every card room and everyone must be smart enough to follow them. Violators will be punished accordingly.

* Use of illegal substances is a no-no.

* Disturbing the environment by noise and other unnecessary arguments.

* Destroying something that is not yours is totally wrong.

* Using obscene language is not only intolerable, it is also demeaning.

Table etiquette includes:

* No cell phone at the tables. It’s simple. You are there to play poker not to talk on the phone.

* Wait for your turn.

* Never reveal what’s in your hands, giving other players information that they should not be actually having.

* No string bets. After players have placed their bet, they should not increase whenever they feel like it.

* Purposely stalling in the game.

* Arranging the chips in a disturbing manner. i.e., stacking them which could interfere with card dealing or card viewing.

* Show all your cards to all the other players in the table.

* Players cannot tell another player to turn their hand face up during the showdown.

Like any poker game, Omaha involves betting on chance and not on real cards. You place a bet with the potential of what you have as the basis and not on a hand that has actually been made. With a risked bankroll and tension born of suspense, making a good decision is just too much pressure. It’s difficult to know, so perhaps the best thing to do is to trust your instinct. Well that, and of course a little reasoning never killed anyone.

In Omaha, some hands can look very promising. In reality though, they turn out to be bad hands with slim chances of winning. Newbies have the most to lose here, because they can’t tell which hands are good and which ones just look good. For example, you have a five, six, eight, and nine. It looks you think to yourself that you’ve just scored the jackpot – all you need is a seven to get a straight! The flop comes out, and the dealer lays down two six’s and a four. You were able to flop a trip, and because you think you have the most awesome cards ever and you totally lucked out, you push a stack to the center. With any luck, your confidence may just scare your opponents into folding.

Here’s the real picture, time to take off your rose colored poker goggles. You have a trip, which is pretty much next to nothing in this game. The chances that someone else has a four isn’t slim, and a double pair beats a trip any day. Now, if you never get that seven to give you a straight, then your stack is entirely relying on the trip for the win – you won’t entrust your life to a man who can’t swim, so why entrust your money to cards that can’t win for you? Always look at the greater picture and think about the possible cards of your opponents before you act. Calculating your chances of winning may be the thing that can save you from losing.

Instinct is what has kept the human race alive and kicking for the past millions of years. It has told mother everywhere that their children are lying, convinced trailblazers to build a new path, inspired visionaries to live lives of self sacrifice, given two cars about to hit at a head-on collision the signal to go right and avoid the accident. Heck, it tells us what to do every single day! We listen to it when making decisions in the grocery, we take directions from it when avoiding our most hated enemy at work, we take its advice when attempting to push buttons of others to get them to do something we want. It is this same little voice that helps people win the lottery, the track race, and the wonderful game that is Texas Hold’em.

Games of chance are games won by instinct. Some people say it is luck, some people say it’s talent – but it really boils down to how you are able to listen to that voice whispering to you when you’re at a loss for solutions and unsure about what you should do. Let’s say you have a 2 and a 6. The flop comes around and you see a 3, A and 2. Your brain tells you to fold, but your instinct goes against it. Which voice do you listen to? There is a very limited time to use logic and permutations or statistics when the dealer lays a flop down and you’re the firs to act. It’s difficult to reason out that although you have a chance of getting the lowest straight in the history of Poker hands, you should take comfort in the chance of getting a two-pair. Hence, you just rely on your gut feel and check. This voice can also enlighten you with things that are beyond reason, such as a strong feeling that the next card will be a high or a low card or the inkling that your opponent has better cards than you or that he is bluffing his way to the pot. Learn to listen before you start throwing your money into the pot.
