Confidence

If your spirit is easily broken and you’re the type who throws in the towel before the buzzer sounds, then poker isn’t the game for you. Confidence is a vital element of a victorious hand in poker, especially in Texas Hold’em. Like my grandmother always told me when I was younger, you can never win the battle if you’ve already declared defeat in your mind. Texas Hold’em is a game with different stages. First, the big blind and the small blinds fill the pot with their forced bets. Afterwards, the dealer distributes two face down cards to each player, one at a time. The first round of betting is in order, and then comes the three-card flop in the middle of the table, followed by one more round of betting. The fourth card on the table following the flop is the turn. This is the second to the last card and is followed by one more betting round. The last of the community cards, the river is shown and then the last round of betting follows. After all bets have been made or foregone, it’s time to show cards, declare the winner and show me the money!

First of all, the simple and quick run-through of how Hold’em is played doesn’t do justice to this intricate and exciting game. During the betting rounds, people can bluff, fold, raise or even go all-in. A very important thing to remember is that every round is just as important as the previous one, and each card generates an equal chance of winning. So if it’s looking bleak on the the turn (fourth card), keep in mind that there is always the fifth card. Simply put, confidence is not the “key” to winning – but it definitely helps to have some hope. If you have the potential to hit a set, then keep your hopes up and boost your confidence. If you have a bad hand from the very start, then learn to swallow hopes and fold, BUT still keep the confidence because one round isn’t the basis of winning the battle.
