Seven-Card Stud
Like most of the various types of poker that players know of nowadays, the exact inception of the seven-card stud is unclear, and no documentation shows when the game began or who came up with it originally. It has been introduced to the world of poker in the early twentieth century and has been around ever since. One thing is for certain, though: until the boom of the Texas Hold’em in the turn of the twenty-first century, the seven-card stud was the most popular poker game in the market. Majority of the professional casino poker games that have hit the tables were formed from some modified form of the seven-card stud poker.
The fame of the seven-card stud could be easily attributed to a number of factors: first, it is quite an easy game – as easy as the five-card stud, actually – without taking away the element of suspense and just the right amount of strategy. Unlike the five-card stud game where only one card remains unrevealed before the showdown, in the seven-card stud a player is dealt three hole cards and four upcards. This decreases the chances of a person to be able to “read” or analyze the cards that their opponents have, as well as the cards that they could expect in the deck, therefore making strategizing a bit more difficult than when you play the simple five-card stud. Also, unlike the five-card stud, which only has four betting rounds, this has five betting rounds, so there is an additional round of betting which allows the players more time and strategy for their gameplay. Because of the added complexity in the game brought about by more betting rounds and more unrevealed cards, this game is recommended for the high-stakes poker games and is often played with a no-limit or pot-limit system of betting. Still, the simplicity in its mechanics still makes it a very home game-friendly poker variant, and so it works for both recreational gamers and for professional poker players alike. If the five-card stud is the mother of poker games, then the seven-card stud is the godmother of sorts, considering a lot of the professional games stemmed out from this one game.
